So, tomorrow from 10-12 we have rehearsals for Ivy Day and Commencement, after which is the senior photo. 672 students will receive degrees this year including 62 Adas including me.
Saturday is Ivy Day. Sunday is commencement.
It's going to be a busy few days here then I have some time off to recover from the last few years. It'll be nice. =)
Ivy Day is a 100+ year tradition here at Smith where the day prior to commencement, alum from previous years (at some specific interval, which I didn’t check into) parade down the quad, which is lined by the senior graduating class. The seniors fall in line in their place behind the alum, carrying Ivy, which they then plant in the middle of the quad. This planting of ivy is symbolic of a never ending connection to the college.
Oh, and prior to all of this each senior gets a rose. We have to wear all white and dark shoes. I had to buy new clothing for this. I don’t own white clothing. White clothing is not only see-through, it gets dirty fast. I, myself, am also extremely pale (blue eyes, skin that burns in 5 minutes, you know?) and I don’t particularly feel that white is a good way to make myself look uh.. alive? =)
I’m not sure if any other schools have this particular tradition. But Smith does. Unfortunately, if it rains, we just get the parade at the indoor track and tennis field. Kind of lamerish, but alas.
Tidbit: The alums start this year with the graduating class of 1942 - which is when Betty Friedan (pretty much the forefront of women’s lib) graduated from Smith. President Christ noted that if Betty Friedan was still alive, she’d probably head up the 1942 portion of the parade.
Yes - those ladies were 21-22 in 1942. It’s not going to be a super fast moving parade. Pretty impressive tradition though. =)
But I’m sure there’s something in a shade of grey…
Something in between…
