Redesign: The Gallery

As I have mentioned, I am actively working on redesigning the site. Part of that is the lovely break that work gave us, another is a long-term unhappiness with the last redesign, and another is a need to keep myself focused on something other than my latest failed interpersonal relationship (<- this last is me sulking, deal!)

Anyway!! So I'm redesigning. I've got most of it done, although I have some minor width issues to fix with the member and forum templates, but I haven't yet dealt with the gallery. Here is the issue: I don't update the gallery. Why? Because I can't send directly from my photo management app to the site. I have to manage the photo, manually crop because I'm a control freak, and add it as an entry. All of this leads to not updating the gallery because I'm lazy; if I can't right click and "export", it doesn't happen.

So, I'm considering moving my online photo storage options to Flickr or Picasaweb. I have photos in both already but haven't used either in a very long time. So - have any of you used both? What do you think? Both have jQuery and other library options for making them magically appear on my site. Dad uses Picasaweb, and most of my friends use Flickr. What to do, what to do?

So, any opinions? Here are the options for your perusal:

  1. Flickr
  2. Picasaweb

Thanks =)

I’ve personally only ever used Flickr. I’ve never had any problems browsing it and I like it overall. No real opinion on Picasaweb. You’re the only one I’ve ever had link me to Picasaweb before. Also if those were suppossed to be links to their sites they’re not working in IE 7.

Sir Polar Bear, those were not links.  I wanted opinions from those who had used those services, so included the assumption that those people would know the URL to get to them. ;)

Well so far Flickr is winning.

But I’m sure there’s something in a shade of grey…
Something in between…

I never know what works or isn’t working with IE 7 and was posting from work. I just wanted to make sure that they indeed were not links. I hope you have a good New Years Madame Kitty Kat

I love Flickr, it’s very community-oriented. Are you throwing out the DEM gallery then, as in the EE part?

Yes, more than likely.  I may move some of it over a a weblog for handling, but probably do most of it via Flickr.

I’ve tinkered with both, and while there are pros and cons of each, I would suggest staying away from Flickr. When Flickr was bought out by Yahoo, along came some TOS changes and they are VERY scary. But before I briefly get into that (I’ll be following up later when time permits as it’s NYE and I am HAMMERED), here is the Flickr API, etc page to look around at…

http://developer.yahoo.com/flickr/

Now, with that out of the way, the TOS is VERY, VERY scary if you read it thoroughly,  but first, let’s look at the misdirection.. Goto flickr.com and scroll to the footer and click on Terms of Service, look where you are taken (the link is http://www.flickr.com/terms.gne to save you some time, and it comes up in a very small pop-up by default, so, if you don’t block pop-ups and it actually comes up, you shouldn’t be lazy and actually expand and read thoroughly, because now you are under Yahoo TOS and not the old Flickr TOS (no Creative Commons here folks, even if you really wanted to share, but that’s not a bad thing, if not for the following)...

9. CONTENT SUBMITTED OR MADE AVAILABLE FOR INCLUSION ON THE SERVICE

The first line is

Yahoo! does not claim ownership of Content you submit or make available for inclusion on the Service.

Which is wonderful, except the first word right after that is “HOWEVER” (don’t you love “buts” or “howevers”).

you grant Yahoo! the following worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license(s), as applicable:

Which is common with free online services, but these are your images, and this where you have to read each paragraph and read between the lines on some of it.

I’ll go into the dangers of some it (like altering) later when I’m more coherant, my favorite is:

perpetual, irrevocable and fully sublicensable license to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, publicly perform and publicly display such Content (in whole or in part) and to incorporate such Content into other works in any format or medium now known or later developed.

mmmm “FULLY SUBLICENSABLE” wait until you read the very bottom with all the companies and crap that can use/alter your images how they see fit, where you get no royalties, acknowledgment, etc. And if they sub-license it with a different License, it supercedes anything previous. Very tricky isn’t it?

Anyway, I’ll be back later when I sober up to put the pros and cons of the features of each, since you may not care about things like that, but if you post them there, and I’m a fellow member, I can use/alter, etc your image, and put them on one of my “websites” (cough).

CyberSpy, you seem to be the educated one on this subject. You should write a post about this. :)

Anything that’ll make CyberSpy update his own site would be a blessing. ;)

Flickr (and Yahoo!) have made changes which may make people think twice about using them, but I have nothing but good experiences with Flickr.  I use it to post pics for my front page.

I’m using EE’s Photo Gallery module for my photos, but that may go away if I figure out a swell way to tie the photo section to Flickr.  Then again, given my limited brain capacity and overall understanding of EE and it’s modules, I might just leave it like it is.  :)

Digifiend, did you check out my gallery? That’s using the eeFlickr module…. =)

I might try eeFlickr, but I had a problem getting it to show in my modules tab (I left a query on the EE forums).  I do like the idea of not having to keep two different photo stores, thanks for the info!

That’s a bit odd, I had no problems with it - was very, very easy to get up and running. =)
