Elka is scared of loud noises.
So, yesterday she was in daycare, and last night we went to the dog park. This morning we spent 2 hours at the park. Am I keeping her exhausted? Absolutely.
However, if there are fireworks around here, exhaustion may not matter. Coddling a fearful dog ("It's ok baby, it's ok, good girl, it's ok") only reassures them that fear is good. So, if Elka shows any fear of the fireworks, we'll instead play: roughhouse, toss a ball, tug of war, have a party. I'll get her to re-focus on my using "look" and giving her treats and doing some basic obedience. All of these should make her able to cope with the loud bangs of fireworks and enjoy them, even. Lots of play, no fear. Loud noises? Party-time!
Keep your dogs near you during this, many will panic and run away; it is tragic to lose a dog to something that you can manage. Don't go out to dinner or leave the animals alone on this of all days; stay with them, make it a happy fun time, and you'll find yourself with a happy, confident companion.
Have a happy and safe 4th!
